What Happens When You Stop Brushing Your Teeth?

halitosis, bad breath, breath, smelly breath, beat bad breath,

Ever wondered what would happen if you stopped brushing your teeth altogether?

You’ve probably thought about it. You’ve probably thought  ‘my teeth would probably just fall out and that would be it”. You’re half right. Kind of. Not brushing opens the door for bacteria leading to tooth decay and gum disease. However, not brushing won’t just affect your mouth, but your entire body.

What happens when you stop brushing your teeth?

We’ll tell you what happens when you stop brushing your teeth. When you stop brushing your teeth, food and bacteria build up on your teeth. This attacks your enamel and your gums, which can sometimes cause bleeding and irritation. It can also lead to caries, meaning that you’re going to need fillings! But that’s not all. The infection in your gums will send alarm bells to your immune system. Your immune system then sends fighter cells to battle the bacteria, which is good! BUT, this can also damage the cells in nearby tissue and bone.

Eventually, after around 6 months or so, that tissue and bone will eventually die off. Your gingivitis will have developed into periodontal disease. This means your tooth/teeth have no structural support, which causes your teeth to separate from your gums. This allows pockets to form for the bacteria to fill. These pockets easily become infected and cause your teeth to fall out. Not fun for anyone.

It will affect more than just your mouth!

Did you know that poor oral health may increase your risk of heart disease, kidney disease, and even dementia. In a recent study, people with periodontal disease were five times more likely to develop a chronic kidney disease than people with good oral health. In another, it was discovered that people in retirement homes who didn’t brush their teeth daily, had up to a 65% greater risk of dementia. Some pretty shocking statistics. Last but not least, there is also a higher risk of developing certain cancers.
