It seems like there’s so much food and drink that does damage to your teeth these days. Although, what if there are teeth whitening foods…
It’s not really a ‘what if’, there are loads of healthy teeth whitening foods. They may not bleach them but a lot of these foods work to wash away discolouration and to use their abrasive textures to buff away stains. We bet you’re looking to add these to your diets, so why don’t we get started?
Milk and Yoghurt
Dairy products like yogurt and milk contain lactic acid and the enamel-fortifying mineral calcium, which whiten and strengthen teeth at the same time.
Water
This one seems obvious because what isn’t water good for. Drinking water between glasses of wine and while you eat dark foods helps in reducing stains from the food. Try and drink still over sparkling though as the bubbles can erode teeth.
Pear
Who doesn’t love some fruit? This sweet, delicious treat helps neutralise the acid in your mouth that causes decay.
Cheese
Cheese fanatics will be pleased that this is a member of the teeth whitening foods family. Hard cheese, like the little blocks you get on those fancy appetizer trays, is full of calcium, which strengthens teeth and gums. Casein, a milk protein found in cheese, has been shown to reduce the loss of minerals from tooth enamel.
Onions
Though they may not help your breath, onions are good for whitening. Sulphur compounds in onions prevent the gathering of plaque on teeth. However, this is only applicable when you eat them raw.
Strawberries
Malic acid is present in strawberries and is a natural astringent to remove tooth discolouration. It doesn’t matter how you eat them, they’ll benefit your teeth.
Apples
Biting into a crunchy apple actually aids in strengthening your gums! The high water content of apples encourages saliva production and this will wash away potential discolouring bacteria.
