Dental Hygiene Rules You Don’t Know but Should Follow
We think we know all the basic dental hygiene tips. But we probably don’t.
You’ve been brushing your teeth your whole life but its likely there are a couple of things you could be incorporating into your dental hygiene routine that you haven’t already.
Brushing and flossing twice a day is still important. However, we’d like to highlight the tips that fly under the radar, but could have a huge effect on your dental hygiene.
Brush or scrape your tongue.
Just like your teeth, your tongue can hoard bacteria if it isn’t taken care of properly. Lightly brushing or scraping your tongue twice a day alongside brushing will ensure your mouth is minty fresh and super clean.
Don’t use mouthwash after you brush.
A common misconception is that you rinse with mouthwash straight after brushing your teeth. Your toothpaste has a higher fluoride concentration than your mouthwash does. So if you rinse after brushing you’re pretty much washing away a higher level of fluoride for a lower level. Which isn’t ideal for your dental hygiene. To avoid this, opt to use mouthwash after lunch rather than directly after your morning brush.
Keep your toothbrush in the right place.
You should rinse your toothbrush after brushing, store it in an upright position to air-dry, and keep it away from closed containers to prevent growth of bacteria, mould, and yeast.
Use a soft bristled brush.
If you’re quite heavy handed, hard bristled brushed might not be for you. Toothbrushes with hard bristles can damage your gums and expose tooth root surfaces if they’re not used properly.
Don’t brush too much or too hard.
“Don’t brush too much?!” I hear you say, but it’s true, you can! Much like brushing too hard, excessive brushing weaken your tooth enamel. This makes them more susceptible to a wide range of issues and that would certainly flush your good dental hygiene down the pan.
If you keep these tips in mind you’re set to have stellar oral hygiene. One last thing though… Of course keep up to date with your dental check ups, but you already knew that one!
