Retain Your Retainers!
As a teenager, there was nothing quite like getting your braces off.
You were excited and couldn’t wait to show off your new smile you had waited so long for!
After the braces come off, the retainer comes out and you vow that you’ll wear it. You do, day in and day out, it’s almost like a routine. So why a few years down the line do you stop wearing it?
More and more adults are having to opt for adult braces to reverse the effects of avoiding wearing their retainer after their original braces were removed.
Teeth are not static – Wear Your Retainers!
They are dynamic and are always moving. They will continue to move and shift even though you’ve had braces. They’ll try to move forward, up and outwards, and they will continually crowd.
This is where retainers crucially come into play. They lock the teeth into place and, over time, the memory of these ligaments will fade. However, our teeth are continually moving so it is wise, once you’ve attained a functional and aesthetic bite with braces or Invisalign, it is important to maintain this position as long as you can.
Don’t let the work go to waste!
If you want to keep your post-brace smile looking good, you have to wear your retainer. It really is that simple. In some cases, not wearing your retainer could lead to you having to get braces fitted for a second time.
Retainers do much more than just keeping teeth in place. They protect teeth from wear and tear, too. So retain those retainers! You might think that you don’t need them after a while but they really will keep your smile perfect!
